We at the Tampa Repertory Theatre are thrilled to have you here with us to share the experience of The Bridges of Madison County. This beautiful story marks our final production of our fourteenth season of creating transformative, relevant, and compelling professional theatre that connects us through meaningful and inspiring shared experiences.
The Bridges of Madison County asks questions that are fundamental to the human condition as it explores the concept of choice and sacrifice in a way that is heartbreakingly real. I see this as a deeply human story that resonates with everyone with its emotional depth, thematic richness, and universal appeal embedded within the narrative and score. The story speaks to anyone who has grappled with identity, sacrifice, longing, or the path not taken—making it a work of art that resonates far beyond boundaries and differences. The tension between duty and desire is a dilemma that most of us face as we grapple with decisions that shape the course of our lives. Whether it’s the pursuit of a career, the pull of family, or the haunting thought of what might have been. Decisions are rarely black and white, and every choice comes with both loss and gain. Love, vulnerability, and introspection are part of what makes us human.
This story brings to light the depth and vulnerability we might feel as we confront our own loneliness and search for meaning. We all want to be truly seen and yearn to be understood. It is a story of connection, timing, and the impermanence of life. I particularly love the character of Bud as he embodies the duty, sacrifice, and the complexity of real love that are a part of the life many people live—not perfect, not passionate, but real, and rooted in loyalty and love. The importance of community is also crucial to the story. We have an incredible ensemble who play a vital role in illuminating the community connection, expectations, and support system.
We have been talking about producing this compelling masterpiece of a musical for a decade. I am thrilled to be able to bring this story to life in the Staz Center’s Jaeb Theater with the help of our incredible sponsors. Jason Robert Brown’s score is lush, sophisticated, and emotionally
intricate. For me, the music elevates the story to a spiritual level, allowing us to feel the characters’ emotions viscerally. There’s good reason for why this musical won the Tony for Outstanding New Score.
I invite you to get swept away by The Bridges of Madison County.
